When we think of health and fitness, you often think about spending time at the gym or eating green foods. However, one thing that we don’t think about as often as we should do are our organs, like our heart, lungs, and brain – and what I’m focusing on here – our eye health.
You might be thinking, eye health? Yes, you read that right – eye health. Our eyes are not just the windows to our souls but also to the world. They deserve just as much TLC as we give our muscles and cardio health.
Keep reading to discover ways to integrate eye care into your fitness lifestyles.
Debunking The Myths
Let’s start by debunking a common myth. Do carrots improve eyesight? While they are a good source of vitamin A and essential for eye health, eating carrots alone won’t turn you into a night owl (unfortunately!) Our eyes need more than that – they need a variety of nutrients such as Omega-3 fatty acids, zinc, and vitamins C and E.
Don’t Forget Check-Ups
Visiting the doctor when we notice something concerning is important. Just like visiting the dentist is recommended at least once a year, the same should be applied to your eye health. Regular eye check-ups should be an integral part of your health routine. It will help to detect any early signs of eye health issues and provide you with an updated overview of your eyesight.

Should you need to update your prescription, then ensure that you invest in new glasses or contact lenses to suit your eyesight. Look for the cheapest contact lenses as this will help you save a little cash while ensuring you have the right eye prescription.
Remember To Hydrate
Hydration, hydration, hydration is a mantra that fitness enthusiasts swear by and is also essential for our eyes. Drinking plenty of water can help prevent dry eye and maintain your eyes’ overall health. Six to eight glasses of fluid, preferably water, is the recommended amount of liquids a person should consume daily. So next time you reach for that water bottle after a good run or a long walk, remember you’re also doing your eyes a favour.
Protect Your Eyes From UV Rays
Speaking of exercising outdoors – while we love the vitamin D sunshine provides, it can be a double-edged sword for our eyes. UV rays from the sun can damage our eyes, leading to conditions like cataracts. Hence, a good pair of UV-protective sunglasses is as important as your SPF 50 sunscreen. Before you head outside to exercise, ensure you have water to hydrate, SPF to protect your skin, and sunglasses to protect your eyes.
Allow Your Eyes To Rest
Just as you exercise to keep your body fit, your eyes also need their workout. How? A simple exercise is the 20-20-20 rule. If you spend a long time in front of a computer then take a break from your screen every 20 minutes and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. This will give your eyes a well-deserved break and help to reduce eyestrain.
Remember, integrating eye care into your fitness lifestyle doesn’t have to be difficult. Taking time to care for our eyes will help us see the world in a brighter, clearer, and healthier way. So, let’s get those peepers in shape!
