I don’t claim to be a scooter security expert but when I hear about a nifty new gadget which could help recover stolen bikes then my ears prick up. Not a day goes by without a Facebook post about somebody’s pride and joy being taken, and no matter how securely we lock and tether our scooters, thieves always seem to be one step ahead.
One idea, if you have the space, could be to buy shipping containers like these which could be used to store a few scooters, and anything else of value.
If the worst were to happen and your bike was stolen then it seems like a great idea to be able to track it to give you a better chance of getting it back. Furthermore, if you were called the moment it was moved then at least you could potentially do something about it.
So when a friend told me how impressed she was with a tracker she’d recently bought I thought I’d share the word so that hopefully more scooters are recovered should the worst happen.
MoniMoto Scooter Tracker
The MoniMoto scooter tracker is sold by SLUK and can be easily fitted to any scooter even if you don’t possess any mechanical skills. It’s great for classic scooters which don’t have a constant power supply which are needed for many other trackers on the market. It comes with a key fob, SIM card and an app you can download to your smartphone which connects to the device and allows you to configure the settings. If the scooter is moved, and the key fob isn’t nearby, then the owner is alerted with a phone call after one minute. You can then track the GPS location of the scooter which means that if it’s stolen then you can see where it goes.
My friend fitted the MoniMoto to her Lambretta, finding it very straighforward. She then needed some work to be done on the scooter so entrusted it into the care of my mechanically-minded husband. On the first day he started work on it, my friend got a phone call telling her the scooter had been moved, and asking whether she’d like to track it! She then got a follow-up text also asking whether she’d like live GPS tracking to be started. It was a really great test of the MoniMoto’s capabilities, and impressed us both.
You don’t need to worry about the unit getting wet as it’s waterproof, and the batteries last a year.
Vespa Recovered Thanks To Tracker
SLUK recently reported a GTS owner who received the call to say his bike had been moved, so he started tracking it. He could see where it had been taken, so while a friend called the police he went and found it hidden behind some bins in an alley. He was able to recover it, repair the cosmetic damage, and get it back on the road really quickly.
The MoniMoto isn’t cheap, but then compared with the cost of a scooter and the hassle of being off the road if it’s stolen, is actually not bad at all. It’s £142.99 plus the SIM, which is €3 per month after the first two months which are free. Or you can use your own SIM, if you have one.
