A new scooter book has just been published which was written by Stuart Owen, recently featured as a My First Rally subject.
Vespa And Lambretta Motor Scooters charts the history of scooters, from their humble beginnings in post-war Italy to the modern automatic machines currently produced.
There are some great photos from the archive, and fascinating facts including one which caught my husband’s eye, that 100,000 Lambrettas were sold in the UK in 1959 alone. No wonder they are still being found in sheds and barns up and down the country!
The author, Stuart Owen, has been involved in scootering since the 1980s. He was a champion Lambretta racer, British record holder and is now Scootering magazine’s tech expert and a regular writer on a number of subjects. My fave was the lambretta Li series 1 for many years but have owned many other lambretta salon guys the years also a few Vespas but I must say since my disability my scomadi 125cc is my favourite just the ease of riding an auto with the reliability means I can still indulge in my passion of scooter riding

I love the freedom of just getting on my scoot and go, I love the rides in groups and meeting so meny like minded scooterests and then I love the rallies music cloths custom shows, yep I love it all ?
My favourite scoot has to be…..My px 200 and my GP200… can’t choose between them as had them so long

Love rats and rusto’s, chops and plenty of Matt black. Most of mine have been a combination of those. For pure reliability a standard old school P200E would be my choice and fave classic has to be a Lambretta series 1.
Favourite scooter has to be the 80’S work horse The P200E.
Lambretta gp200e is my fave but did have a soft spot for P200E in the late 80`s and early 90`s
Been a P Ranger most of my scootering life but have now moved to a Lambretta GP 240 for something different. Love all geared classic scooters

A scooter boy at heart. In 1968 I bought a LI125 second had it had single seats and the guy gave me an old helmet…. like the coppers used to wear in the 60s. I recall hand painting it and using it as my daily transport to Leeds. It gradually got a few additions, a double seat, front and rear bars, mirrors, KL backrest and the required tank arial. It was sold to buy my car some years later.
Some 50 years on I treated myself to an ’85 GP200 …. and having moved from the north down to the south coast I am looking forward to a ride over to Brighton…. it’s where all mods on scoots want to go one day.
Vespa through and through, hundreds of miles, thick and thin, highs and lows, the best times of my life, both with family and friends, I’ve never looked back with more happiness than getting older, with the fondest memories.
Lambretta TV 175 all day long. Reliable with good performance. Miss it terribly.
Always wanted a SX200 but never managed to get one, but loved my GP200 in the seventies
